LIFE ON THE COLUMBIA

A recent request to push this to the top of the blog..a fun project in getting your graphic foot in the door.. I created this magazine cover to promote a project to Sunset.. and it grabbed their attention! They came out for a photo shoot and an article. The home was originally a boat repair shop on the Columbia so the piers and posts jetting into the river were grandfathered in to remain - allowing for the fabulous deck!

Columbian views on Reclaimed Lumber

The ceiling was refurbished from the original boat house -Which had been refurbished from the Bonneville Dam! The beetle paths in the wood were a surprising natural art form

Metal as the modernist Rorschach

The introduction of metal as art form into a recent corporate headquarters project in palo alto has opened eyes to another level of appreciation for the beauty of materials in their natural state. Striving for LEED Gold - the substitution of recycled metal for typical wall construction materials incorporates a shift of perspective on the Structure as Finish concept and introduces an high tech Rorschach test ....

Metal as a Porcelain Watercolor

Metal represented as art via porcelain tile.. thanks to Dal Tile. .. .. its an organic form that some how has been mastered by glazing artists to repeat in enough mass production to be a great price in large format tile but yet complex enough in each tile to be beautiful- appearing unique even over large installations . Taken out of context and adding a frame it could be a stormy watercolor

concrete art .2

Its porcelain tile... large format and great price

FIBERGLASS WITH A ROBUST FINISH

This project is a transformation of a basement crawl space into a barrel vaulted wine cellar.

The center focal piece is an African Purple Heart table hand made and includes ‘secret’ drawer which opens with a magnetic key to house lap top. We distressed the edges by beating it with chains and even rolled over the wood with a truck. After sanding and sealing, the surface is incredibly smooth.

An Italian mirror is integrated into wooden storage wall to disguise a wall safe.

The wood structure is hand stamped with small alphabetical and numerical branding coding system to organize the wine collection.

AUTOSTRADA 516

Over the past several years I have been working on residential remodel projects as Studio 516, tangent to my day jobs with architecture firms. I decided to focus on my company and offering design consultation services. I consult with other designers, architects and contractors for a team approach that is collaborative and interactive.

My educational and professional background has been heavily integrated with architecture and construction. This gives me a unique perspective to integrate the interiors and the building, contributing to a cohesive design.

In residential projects, I consider my work to be design and visualization services. I have found most homeowners have an idea of what they what, either a general feeling of the resulting space or very specific direction. Collaborating directly with homeowners and tailoring a project to meet their vision is the core of why I enjoy interior design.

In each project type, I see my role as a facilitator of the client’s ideas, my goal is to listen intently and pull together the elements that will best achieve the end result. My past architectural experience and construction background also allows me to play a role in the project to completion with an understanding of budgets and schedules.

In the creative process I still use the old fashion pencil and sketch to brainstorm ideas and visualize. AutoCAD and REVIT are essential tools for documentation but tangible materials, textures and renderings can often convey the character of the space.
